Chapter 21
My afternoon nap was cut short because of the loud bang on the door, I refrained myself fron cursing, thinking it might be Lydia, its been long she visited since she brought her parents i thought to myself. I opened the door only to see a very angry woman, Peter's mom, I stood frozen with zero idea of what to do or say.
"Good afternoon ma" I finally say, she took in my features from head to toe. She scrunches her face after she realize I have been sleeping.
"Sorry I took time to open up" I added, "come in" I said with visible nervousness, I feel like nothing I do will please her, but I can't stop trying.
"So you're here sleeping like madam while my poor son is outside working his life out" she said with much hatred, I hung my head low since I have no reply for that.
"You think God will forgive you for destroying my son's life" she fumed, if only Paul could take his own fair share of blame, for Christ sake I was drugged.
"You're nothing more than a cheap whore, I see the way you fawn over my boys, finally seducing Paul and dragging Peter along, my innocent boy" she said hitting her chest in agony and crying, I tried to comfort her, but her barking at me made me rooted at my spot.
"K I beg you, I will pay you off, no matter the amount, just release the spell you cast on my son" she said and I looked at her bewildered, she just accused of me of witchcraft.
"Ma, my only crime is dragging Peter along with me, you often forget I was drugged, now you accused me of witchcraft" I said my tears already welled up.
"How do you explain this character of Peter if not witchcraft" she said. I refuse to say anymore "you slut" she said as she lay abuses on me, drawing the attention of the neighbors, I just stood there with head hunged low and tears streaming down.
After her verbal abuse she left with the promises of coming back, its only after she left that I closed the door, she embarrassed me now am thinking how I will walk freely with no shame.
After a while I was able to gather my strength and made dinner for Peter, I don't want him seeing me like this, I will hide his mother's visit from him, he already have a lot bothering him, though he doesn't show it, his shouldering a huge responsibility by taking care of me.
When he came back I tried my best to show him a smiling face, luckily he was too tired to notice my sadness, he went to bed early.
Peters mother came twice again, she brought the proposal of paying me off, I refused, I hid it all from Peter, admist all this trouble, Peter was able to surprise me once more.
"You like it right" he said, I nodded my head vehemently, we're now in our new apartment, 3 bed room flat, he said since the baby is coming soon we need the space.
"You're so full of surprises" I said and he smiled
"The best for the best" he said cupping my cheek, then stared at me with a new strange look, it tightened the knob of my stomach, never have he stared at me with much tensity, like am the only one he sees, and I became a prisoner to the hard stare.
"Everything is in other sir" one of the labourer said, pulling us out from our reverie, Peter cleared his throat and turned to the man
"Thanks, wait outside" he said and the man left, he then turned back to me but no longer met my eyes "he called me sir" he said and giggle "explore the house, let me go pay them" he said and left, I smiled inwardly, I have no idea of what the stare means, cause with Peter nothing is certain, maybe something was on my face, I moved to the mirror but saw nothing.
I kept checking the house. Its a new building, 2 storey building, we're living in the first floor, the downfloor is packing store so nobody is living there, we have 3 neighbors from my findings, it's not far from his store, but no longer trekkable like before. I hope it doesn't stress him much.
I checked the rooms, two have TV, the sitting room is nice, not too decorated just have this uniqueness and neatness surrounding it, I touched the sofa and wondered when he did it all, I stared at the 42 inches plasma TV on the wall, our old one is now in one of the rooms. He wake up today and announced we're moving, I thought its a joke until the car and the labourers arrived to pack our things, he refused me to touch anything, he hardly wants to see me work. New car, new apartment, careful Peter, I might have to rely on you for life, I smiled at the thought.
"Heavy, come let me show you to your room" I heard him said, so I looked his way and he smiled I returned the gesture but that doesn't mean am happy. Am not cause from now on we will be using different rooms, not fun to me cause I've gotten use to his body warmth. I followed him as he led me to my room, it have everything I need,
"Where is yours" I asked, he then took me across the sitting room, and showed me his, so we have the sitting room between us, why didn't he take the room next to mine, scratch that, why are we not in the same room.
"Far" was all I muttered, luckily not loud enough for him to hear, and his own is the masters having its own toilet. We spend the whole day putting the house in order, he did most of the chores, he just told me to cook the food.
We have a visit from the neighbors by evening, 2 are newly married, the other is old couples, their children are all grown ups. We manage to entertain them to best of our knowledge, nobody bothered asking if we're married, I guess the already thinking we are.
"Thanks for the visit" Peter said to them as they're were about to live, they all nodded.
"Take care, and welcome to our compound" the older man said before leaving with others.
"Nice set of people" Peter said and I couldn't agree more "time to retire for the night" he said and headed to his room, I wish I can stick to him sadly I can't, I went to my room to endure the torture of being alone.
"How was ya night" Peter asked with his face so bright, clear evidence he enjoyed his sleep. I was in the kitchen fixing breakfast. "You woke early" he said,
"Yes I couldn't sleep" I said truthfully, worry edge his face he came nearer,
"What's wrong" he asked.
"A little bit headache" I lied, actually cause I missed your warmth jackass.
"You should've came to me" he said, yea I should've came to him last night with that pretence.
"Didn't want to disturb you" I said, he took a deep breath and said nothing, he just took the spoon which am using to melt the custard.
"Go rest, I will take care of things" he said, now how can I fell for another when he spoils me like this.
"I will manage" I said.
"No heavy, I insist" he said and I left. I stared at his back, thinking of what we are, what will change after giving birth, I have no idea what the future will be like, but I will expect whatever future as long as its with Peter
